AP Physics
The Course
A full-year course to prepare the student for the
Advanced Placement Test in May. The course matches a year-long
college-survey course sequence that uses algebra and trigonometry, and
covers a broad range of topics in physics. It is NOT necessarily
intended as a second-year course in physics, although the students'
mathematical/algebraic skills should be advanced -- completion of
trigonometry and at least enrolled in in pre-calculus. laboratory
experience is an expected part of the course, but the major focus will
be in problem-solving.
The Topics
- Mechanics
- Thermodynamics
- Electricity
- Magnetism
- Waves
- Optics
- Modern Physics
The Exam
In mid-May the student is expected to take the AP
Physics B exam given by the College Board. It is comprised of a
90-minute multiple choice section and a 90-minute free-response section,
each equally weighted. During the course of the year practice tests will
be given as part of the evaluation process.
The Class
The pace of the course is a bit more rigorous than the
typical high-school class since it is treated as a college course and
the early-May test date requires it.
